A different lens on behavior

Look beneath the behavior. Notice what a child may be communicating.

Parenting a child who has experienced trauma, loss, separation, disrupted attachment, or multiple transitions can call for a different understanding of behavior. A child may appear defiant, controlling, withdrawn, dishonest, aggressive, overly independent, or resistant to connection. At times, their brain and body may be responding to fear, uncertainty, grief, or past experiences of not feeling safe.

Regulated Together is an eight-part educational series designed to help caregivers understand how trauma can affect a child’s developing brain, nervous system, relationships, and behavior, and how caregivers can become an important part of the healing process.

Every behavior is communication — a short message from Deborah Parker.

Across eight sessions

Understand the child, support the caregiver, strengthen connection

Parents learn to look beyond behavior, recognize early signs of nervous-system activation, and understand fight, flight, freeze, and shutdown responses. The series also makes space for the caregiver’s nervous system: noticing personal activation, staying grounded during difficult interactions, and supporting a child’s movement toward regulation through connection, predictability, and co-regulation.

  1. 1How trauma can affect the developing brain
  2. 2The body’s response to stress and perceived danger
  3. 3Understanding the need beneath difficult behaviors
  4. 4Recognizing and managing caregiver activation
  5. 5Co-regulation and the development of self-regulation
  6. 6Maintaining parental authority while preserving connection
  7. 7Navigating triggers, conflict, rupture, and relational repair
  8. 8Creating a home environment that supports healing and developmental growth

Empathy with boundaries

Regulated Together does not teach permissive parenting. Understanding what may be behind a behavior does not mean excusing unsafe or harmful behavior. Parents explore combining empathy with appropriate boundaries, structure, accountability, and opportunities for repair.

Practical tools for home

Parents explore regulation tools, communication techniques, compassionate accountability, and ways to respond to escalation, and develop a personalized Family Regulation and Connection Plan.

Connection over perfection

Healing doesn’t require perfect parenting. Safe, consistent, regulated relationships repeated over time can create experiences of safety and connection.

The heart of Regulated Together

“Children learn regulation through relationships.”

When caregivers can remain grounded, connected, predictable, and appropriately in charge, they create repeated experiences of safety that can help a child’s brain and body learn that the present can be different from the past. Connection does not replace accountability. Accountability does not require shame.
